Internship (New York): Junior Legal Associate

This position is a 6-month legal associate position starting June 1st, 2012 for JD/LLM recent graduates.

Responsibilities:

• Research and writing on international human rights law and comparative constitutional law.

• Copyediting and translating legal reports and press releases.

• Managing administrative tasks for the legal department.

• Clerical tasks.

The ideal candidate is a hard-working, passionate law school graduate from the US or Latin America interested in gaining work experience with international human rights law. This is an ideal position for someone who plans to pursue a public interest career, sharpen his/her legal research skills before entering academia, or work with a nonprofit organization before starting a career in the private sector.

Qualifications:

• JD/LLM graduate in the United States

• Excellent knowledge of public international law and comparative constitutional law. Knowledge of classical liberal philosophy (precursor of constitutionalism and international human rights law) is a strong plus

• Excellent, proven research and writing abilities

• Full proficiency in English and Spanish is required

• Translation experience beneficial but not required

U.S. Changes to Appointment Scheduling

The US Consulates in Australia have released a new online visa information and appointment service to all non-immigrant visa applications.

From March 2 the new service will provide nonimmigrant visa applicants with:

free call centre assistance
free document delivery
free online appointment scheduling
one visa application fee, payable either online, by phone, or at Australia Post offices

Applicants can continue to review the U.S. Embassy Website at http://canberra.usembassy.gov/ for the latest information during this transition period.

Qualifications:

Formal education or relevant experience in graphic design

Duties:

Designed unique online banners and promotional units for the sales department according to client specifications
Resized logos for various sales projects
Fulfilled several last-minute requests to revise copy or designs on a mockup for a sales client
Communicated with our print staff regarding image rights
Contacted photographers for online rights to images
Searched for high quality Creative Commons images for a large editorial package going live this week
Cropped images (both thumbnails and expanded images) to editor's/creative director's specifications
Mocked up a web page with a header, thumbnails, logos and specific sized ad units for a sponsor
Completed various administrative tasks

Some additional tasks might include:

Designing interactive elements as part of an editorial microsite such as a clickable map or popup images
Designing a mini-site with video/slideshow/clickable profiles
Photoshopping an image to fit as a background of a header
Designing a header for Fast Company's subscriptions department
Brainstorming ways to present an annual editorial package in an innovative way
Searching the web for inspiration to bring to a design meeting for upcoming projects
Creating in-house ads for the promotion of an editorial package • Creating animated ad units for a sponsor
Created static designs for a bumper and lower thirds for a video series

A last word on the Prime Minister's visit

With little more than a week's notice - 8 of the 12 UCWIPers for 2012 were treated to an amazing day in Canberra on Friday, December 15th.

Highlights included meeting the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and numerous other ministers, staff, and journalists. In the attached photo with PM Julia Gillard at Parliament House, the students are (from left to right):

The students have applied through Student Placement Australia New Zealand and of the other four, three were already travelling out of the country and the fourth was in Perth and unable to make the trip on short notice.

PRESS RELEASE: UNI-CAPITOL WASHINGTON INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
16 DECEMBER 2011

This Christmas, a dozen university students from across Australia will head off to Washington, DC to spend their summer interning inside the American Congress as part of the Uni-Capitol Washington Internship Programme (UCWIP).

But before crossing the Pacific the students travelled to Canberra today to meet with the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, and received a few words of advice for their time in the US capital as unofficial ambassadors.

Based in the US, UCWIP is a not-for-profit exchange offering students from 8 universities two-month, full-time internships across a bipartisan array of offices in the House and Senate as well as the non-partisan Helsinki Commission office. Each of the students has been closely matched to their offices through a competitive application process.

Carl Tessman from the University of Queensland said: "Through my internship with the House Judiciary Committee I hope to learn about the American judicial and legislative systems and do my bit to keep up the good reputation Aussie interns seem to have up in the Capitol." UCWIP recently received the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Internationalisation from the University of Queensland.

Helen Babb, from the University of Melbourne and to intern with House Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn, said "I'm extremely excited. I hope to become a diplomat and this internship provides unique hands-on exposure to US domestic politics, foreign policy and its relationship with Australia."

UCWIP aims to promote and strengthen the American-Australian relationship by offering young Australians rare insights into the inner workings of the American legislature while offering congressional hosts opportunities to explore through these young Australians the often parallel public policy debates in Australia.

During their time in the US, interns undertake a range of tasks including legislative research, writing, and constituent liaison. They also attend committee hearings and press conferences.

Programming for UCWIP interns includes briefings by the US State Department and the Australian Embassy; day trips to Philadelphia, birthplace of the American republic and Constitution, and Gettysburg, site of the pivotal Civil War battle. Past interns have also attended presidential swearing-in ceremonies and related inaugural festivities.

UCWIP was created by Eric K. Federing, who directs and manages the program pro bono. His American-Australian internship efforts began in 1999. Prior to that, Federing was a senior congressional advisor for a dozen years as communications director/press secretary for Rep. Norm Mineta of California, the House Transportation Committee, and Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut. Federing is a board member of the congressionally-chartered National Conference on Citizenship and by day an Executive Director for KPMG LLP.

With the 2012 intake, Federing will have organized and shepherded 130 internships across 13 program years. UCWIP's intake will be drawn through 10 Australian universities in 2013.

"To say my role is a privilege is a tremendous understatement," said Federing. I travelled extensively throughout Australia in the 1990s while still a congressional advisor, speaking at universities and to business groups and think tanks. I was inspired to look for new paths to bring Americans and Australians together in ways that were genuine, sustainable, and personalized. I eventually thought that a best way to do this would also give something back to two communities I cared about - Australia and Congress, by connecting them." The real stars of it all, of course, are the hugely enterprising students, with fullest credit for fulfilling this concept owed to them, their universities and all the congressional hosts.

Partnering in UCWIP is Daphne Clones Federing, herself a former senior economist with the Joint Economic Committee in the US Congress and Federing's wife.

Important Travel Note

The new Department of State regulations have changed the SEVIS registration deadline for Work & Travel participants from 30 days to 10 days. This means you must enter the US and register with SEVIS no later than 10 days after your nominated start date. Failure to adhere to these regulations will result in your visa being cancelled.

Internationalisation of teaching and learning and leadership in the promotion of overseas mobility was celebrated at the announcement of five 2011 Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Internationalisation during The University of Queensland's (UQ) Teaching and Learning Week 2011.

The awards were presented at a special ceremony on Wednesday, November 2, in the Eleanor Room of The UQ Club at the St Lucia campus as part of the University's annual Teaching and Learning Week celebrations.

UQ's Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) Dr Anna Ciccarelli said the awards, created in 2009, recognised those organisational units and individuals who had shown leadership in areas that furthered internationalisation of the University.

Dr Ciccarelli said she was delighted the 2011 awards had received the highest number of nominations to date.

Awarded in three categories: organisational unit; staff member; and exchange partner and exchange student of the year.

Exchange Partner of the Year
Eric K Federing, Creator of the Uni-Capitol Washington Internship Program for “Encouraging and promoting overseas student mobility and internationalisation of teaching and learning”.

The program is a unique international exchange between Americans and Australians taking place in the United States Congress. Each year, a small group of Australian university students are given an opportunity to undertake an eight-week congressional internship.

Mr Federing said UQ had been an exceptional partner in the exchange program.

“You have only to glance through what some of your students have done after their internships to know the value these experiences have brought them beyond the particulars of two months spent in a wintery corner of the northern hemisphere,” he said.

“I routinely tell the students that I believe I get the best part of this bargain. I get to give something of value back to Congress and to Australia.

I get to engineer it all as well as I believe it can be done in a pro bono exercise. I get to be their cheerleader, with many scores of lasting friendships made along the way.

“To say this effort of 13 program years has been a privilege is to understate its intrinsic value to me by many fold. I have so enjoyed working with everyone at UQ over the years. I thank you for your continued partnership, trust and, today, recognition.”

We would like to share some excerpts (below) from a story published in the Sydney Morning Herald on August 5, 2010 Thursday about international internships and their positive effects on Australian university students.

Overseas internships are giving students an edge in pursuing their careers, writes Elizabeth Kelleher.

'Each experience opens the door to the next bigger, better opportunity," says University of Wollongong student James Deane of the internship he recently completed at the office of Congressman James Clyburn in Washington D.C. "It's difficult to describe how much you get out of working in a leadership office in the United States for a year because every day something new or exciting would happen," Deane says. "In a practical sense, it gave me the ability to stand out from the crowd. The internship definitely captures the attention of selection committees and job interview panels."

Deane, 25, is one of a growing number of students who are taking advantage of overseas internship opportunities to jumpstart their careers. He visited Capitol Hill as part of the Uni-Capitol Washington Internship Program, which is offered through the University of Wollongong, the University of Sydney and the University of Canberra. The program takes 12 students annually from a range of academic disciplines, including international relations, politics, communications, commerce, law and science.

A senior lecturer in history and politics at the University of Wollongong, Dr Anthony Ashbolt, says the Washington internships are particularly valuable because they immerse the students in a different political culture. "[The internship] challenges them and perhaps at times confronts them, in ways that contribute positively to their understanding of politics." …

Capitol experience leaves a lasting impression on aspiring student

When University of Wollongong student Lily Jade Frencham, 22, applied for the Uni-Capitol Washington Internship Program in May 2008, she was skeptical about her chances of being selected. She knew there had been a record number of applicants and "every step of the selection process, I was sure I'd be knocked out... I almost didn't write the application essay component because I thought there was no point."

But Frencham, who will graduate with a bachelor of laws/bachelor of media (journalism) in December, made it through and was soon working as a press intern in the office of Congressman John Tierney.

"The internship has inspired me to always strive to reach for what you most want. It has inspired me to persist and to push further than I ever would have otherwise, with the knowledge that the only time you're not guaranteed to get what you most desire is when you don't try," she says. "It's been an incredible stepping stone. It was actually directly due to my internship that I was approached by the Oaktree Foundation to direct and lead a youth delegation to the United Nations Summit in New York City. For me, that's pretty much a dream come true."
